Ta Xua is the undisputed capital of cloud hunting in Vietnam. Located in the Northwest highlands, this remote mountainous commune features dramatic, spine-like ridges—most famously the “Dinosaur Backbone.” Between December and March, the combination of high humidity and valley terrain creates a perfect, slow-moving sea of clouds that stays trapped in the valley until midday.

As the fourth-highest mountain in Vietnam (3,046m), Bach Moc Luong Tu is a legendary trekking route forming the natural boundary between Lao Cai and Lai Chau. The trail is notoriously rugged, forcing hikers through dense bamboo forests and steep rock faces. The reward at the Muoi Mountain ridge is a celestial playground where a thick blanket of clouds billows day and night.

Known as the “Roof of Indochina” (3,147m), Fansipan delivers a 5-star cloud-hunting experience. For those who skip the multi-day trek, a state-of-the-art cable car whisks you up into the “City in the Clouds.” At the summit, ancient Buddhist pagodas and grand staircases emerge mysteriously from the mist, creating an incredibly spiritual, cinematic photo backdrop.

Perched on Canh Vong Hill just 1.5 km outside Sa Pa town, this hostel and campsite offers a “stairway to heaven” vibe. In the early morning, clouds roll directly through the property, allowing you to literally sip your morning coffee while surrounded by mist. As the sun rises, the fog clears to reveal the sweeping emerald terraced fields of the Muong Hoa Valley below.

Located just 90 minutes from Hanoi at an altitude of 1,200m, Tam Dao is an easy mountain escape. Often called “Heaven’s Gate,” this sacred hilltop temple in Lam Dong province blends spirituality with breathtaking geography. The pagoda’s minimalist wooden torii gates look out over rolling highlands. At dawn, a soft fog rolls across the temple’s stone courtyard, creating a serene, mirror-like illusion of standing at the edge of the world.

Sitting at over 2,000 meters along the northern border, Y Ty is a wild, untouched plateau wrapped in clouds all year round. The most iconic photography route runs from A Lu to Ngai Thau, where the thick sea of clouds swoops down to swallow the traditional mushroom-shaped mud houses of the Ha Nhi ethnic group amidst the terraced fields.

Located on the Son Tra Peninsula at a modest 700 meters above sea level, Ban Co Peak offers a coastal cloud hunting twist. Famous for the statue of Confucius playing chess alone, this peak gets enveloped in low-hanging sea fog during changing seasons. It offers a spectacular vantage point where you can watch the modern skyline of Da Nang peek through the clouds.

Named after a remote valley in Mu Cang Chai, Lung Cung (2,913m) is an untouched paradise for off-the-beaten-path trekkers. The 2-day journey leads you through pristine primeval forests and fields of wild azaleas. The flat, 1-hectare summit offers an uninterrupted, 360-degree view of a massive cloud ocean blanketing the entire Northwest territory.
